Four Principles to Consider

For groups of people to work together successfully, there are four principles that when followed, provide a much greater chance for success. When one or more are ignored, there are real prospects for projects withering on the vine.

1.  A common vision – What are we trying to accomplish? What do we see the result of our work in the next ten years?

2.  A way to make decisions – Who decides? Do we need consensus? Do we agree to majority rule? Can we implement informed consent?

Agreeing to the decision making process before a critical decision arises avoids the uncertainty and sometimes discomfort of addressing a tough question down the road.

3.  Analysis as the basis for decisions – When it comes time to decide and act, the group should agree as to the connection between the activity pursued and  the relationship to the vision for the team. We may agree that a review of conditions suggests risks, suggests the need to focus on certain aspects of a project, or requires the development of alliances to fill in for where we do not have the resources to move forward alone. But, the importance of  this principle is that the group should struggle through the consideration of the connection between action and outcome and not allow different members to have different perceptions for why we are carrying out a project or task.

4.  The focus is on action – The vision directs our choices. Our decision making structure provides a basis for ensuring clear communication before we act. And analysis is a mechanical way to reconnect to the vision and put decision making into practice. Added all together, these lead to the activities of the team. If we find ourselves pursuing an activity that has not borrowed from the other three principles, we need to come together as a group and make sure that we are still on the same page.
