Montpelier Energy Team :Homes/Weatherization

I've spoken with Linda Henzel, who's worked at FPR and Fish&Wildlife in Development (fundraising).  She's agreed to look at any draft we write up, and help us get it out by next Tuesday Feb 16 (due date, right?)

Can you locate the "Request for Proposals for the next Village Building Convergence" that Gwen mentioned?

Can you write a first draft of what this thing would be?

Well, we should see if a model like this already does exist.  I kind of doubt it to tell the truth.  What would be the use of the model – where would it be displayed?  It seems like it would want to travel beyond the borders of Montpelier if it ended up coming out professional looking and portable.  Maybe it would be something a state agency would be interested in for workshops, demonstrations, +/or conferences.

You described very well what's in my mind.

Off the top of my head...It is a great idea on many levels, with one potential drawback.

Great Idea-ness:

• great co-project of MET Weatherization and Communal Usership teams
• re-useable
• perfect project to bring in the MHS service-learners (Anne Watson, on MET's Transportation team, leads the MHS service-learners)
• quite feasible, with this VBC $ boost, and MET teams, and MHS kids co-venturing.
• There are models out there for us to work from.

Drawback:

• risk of redundancy.  But perhaps not too great a risk.  CVCAC Weatherization's 'weatherizationskillshop.org' (.com?) might have this already made.  However, anything of theirs would not be "owned & operated" within Montpelier.

That sounds like an interesting idea.  I can’t quite picture the physical manifestation of what you are talking about but I’m sure that could be worked out.  Maybe it would make sense to build a cross-section of a house in miniature (like a cut-through or section view in architectural terms), leaving the insulation exposed.  It would be kind of like an over sized (or not?) doll  house with rooms, interior walls, etc. 

I don’t really understand how the grant works but assume they pay for materials and we would be charged with putting together volunteer help to build and insulate the little house (or ½ house as the case may be).

Sure, I guess I would be interested in co-submitting but we would have to find out what that entails, etc.  Maybe we could make this a project for kids at the high school or even middle school since neither one has a wood shop class any longer.  Or maybe that would be a bit too ambitious….

Yes--Steve's idea, which we hi-jacked a bit, turning it into a miniature model of a weatherized house.  Which could be quickly erected in public spaces and/or at public events.

Soren, this is a perfect opportunity to make that happen.  Exactly at the intersection of Weatherization and Communal Usership too.  Want to co-submit this?

I've attached a Request for Proposals for the next Village Building Convergence.  The applications for projects are due February 16th.  If you have ideas for something that an enthusiastic group of people could build in Montpelier to further our sustainability goals, be sure to let them know.  Bike racks, small heating systems, demonstration projects, edible landscapes, the possibilities are endless.
